Power on! New Solar Projects on City Buildings
Published on November 27, 2025
The Moore Lake Community Building just got a little greener! A rooftop solar array was recently installed with a Solar on Public Buildings grant from the Minnesota Department of Commerce. This grant funded 60% of project costs in addition to the 30% federal elective pay credit. The array will generate over 50 MWh of energy annual and result in energy cost savings of more than $200,000 over the next 25 years. Future solar projects on the Public Works Building, Commons Park Building and Water Treatment Plant #3 will be starting soon.
Benefits of the Solar on Public Buildings Program
- Adding solar reduces long‐term energy costs.
- Our local economy benefits from investments made in expanding our energy infrastructure, and from adding clean energy jobs, like solar installations.
- Solar power helps reduce electricity‐based greenhouse gas emissions.
- Solar power adds “homegrown” renewable sources of energy to our building and the state’s electrical grid, since Minnesota currently imports 100% of its fossil fuels.
