Summer Projects call for Summer Permits
Published on July 01, 2025
Apply for a permit when you plan to get a new fence, shed and more!
With summer in full swing, many people are inspired to start outdoor projects to spruce up your property – maybe a new fence for the dog, a handy shed for your tools or screened gazebo to relax in.
While you are planning, the City asks you to be aware of a new, simple step for some of these projects. Starting July 1, if you’re planning to build or install things like fences, small sheds, gazebos and similar structures that aren’t regulated by the building code, you are asked to apply for a quick, no‐fee zoning permit from the City. A Building Permit will continue to be required for larger garages, sheds, retaining walls and similar structures.
Think of it as a way to make sure everything aligns with City guidelines for where things can be placed so that they don’t impact safety, visibility and the need to access utilities. This helps protect your investment by ensuring it is installed appropriately.
Good news – there’s no fee for zoning permits!
What you need to know:
-
Already started your project? If you’ve already broken ground on your fence, shed or gazebo before July 1, you’re all set – no permit needed.
-
Planning to start after July 1? Please apply for a permit before beginning work.
-
Installing something easily removed? If your new addition can easily be moved without using heavy equipment (think plastic playhouses or pop‐up gazebos) you do not need a permit, even after July 1.
Visit the Permit page of the City website at FridleyMN.gov/ZoningPermits, and jump to Zoning Permits. You’ll find application instructions and some helpful tips there.
